March is one of the best times of year for Sika deer scouting in Maryland, especially in the marshes of Dorchester County where we spend much of our time managing properties. With the pressure of hunting season gone and vegetation still low, it becomes much easier to read the landscape and understand how deer used the property throughout the fall and winter.
Unfortunately, once the hunting season ends, most hunters pack their gear away and wait until fall. But for serious hunters, serious outfitters, and land managers, the work is just beginning.
At Nanticoke Outfitters, this is the time when we gather valuable information that helps us prepare for the next season and continue managing our properties for mature Sika stags.
Why Post-Season Sika Deer Scouting Is So Important
Sika Deer Scouting after the season gives us a completely different perspective than what we see during the fall.
During hunting season, our focus is on minimizing disturbance. We are careful about where we walk and how much we move around our properties. Once the season closes, however, we can take the time to explore and analyze what really happened throughout the woods and marsh.
Post-season sika deer scouting allows us to:
- Identify heavily used deer trails
- Find bedding areas that were active during the rut
- Locate feeding zones
- Evaluate stand placement and access routes
- Search for shed antlers
Every piece of information we gather helps improve our strategy for the next season.
Reading Sika Deer Trails in the Marsh
Sika deer are creatures of habit, especially in the marsh environments we hunt across Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
After the season ends, trails become much easier to see because the vegetation has died back. Walking these trails gives us a clear picture of how deer moved between bedding areas, feeding zones, and travel corridors.
We often find:
- Primary travel routes connecting bedding areas to feeders
- Hidden crossing points through thick phragmites
- Edges of marsh islands where stags like to stage before dark
Understanding these routes allows us to make adjustments to stand locations and determine where hunting pressure should be minimized next season.
It’s amazing how much information a simple walk through the marsh can reveal.
Evaluating Stand Locations
At Nanticoke Outfitters, we currently manage five different Sika deer properties in Dorchester County with over 50 stand locations. One of the reasons our hunts are successful is because we constantly evaluate how those stands perform.
Post-season sika deer scouting helps us answer important questions such as:
- Did deer travel within range of the stand?
- Were wind directions affecting deer movement?
- Was hunter access impacting deer behavior?
Sometimes we discover that a stand location needs only a small adjustment — maybe shifting 30 yards or trimming a shooting lane.
Other times, we realize a stand should be relocated entirely based on how deer actually moved during the season.
These adjustments are part of our ongoing property management strategy.
Searching for Shed Antlers
Another exciting part of post-season scouting is shed hunting for Sika antlers.
Unlike whitetail deer, Sika stags tend to hold their antlers later into the winter. Many of them begin dropping antlers between late February and March, making this the perfect time to do some post season sika deer scouting and prep for turkey season.
Some of the best places to find sheds include:
- Along primary travel trails
- Near bedding areas
- Around feeding zones
- Near creek crossings and marsh edges
Finding sheds is not just exciting — it also tells us which stags made it through the hunting season and are still using the property.
Sika Deer Scouting: Planning Improvements for Next Season
Once we finish scouting, we begin making plans for the upcoming year.
This can include:
- Adjusting stand locations
- Improving access routes
- Clearing shooting lanes
- Enhancing feeding areas
- Planning habitat improvements
Small improvements each year can make a huge difference in how deer use a property. Our goal is always to create an environment that supports healthy deer populations while giving hunters the best possible opportunities.

Final Thoughts on Sika Deer Scouting
For many hunters, the season ends when the last day of hunting closes. But for those who truly want to understand deer and improve their success, the off-season is where the real work happens.
Post-season scouting gives us the information we need to refine our strategy, improve our properties, and continue managing for mature Sika stags year after year.
Spring may feel far away from hunting season, but every step taken now helps set the stage for success next fall.
