What gear should I bring for a spring turkey hunt?
Hunters should arrive prepared for changing spring conditions. To prepare for your turkey hunt, we recommend:
- A reliable shotgun or bow set up for turkey hunting
- Turkey-specific ammunition or broadheads
- Full camouflage clothing, including face mask and gloves
- Waterproof boots or knee-high rubber boots
- Weather-appropriate layers for cool mornings and warmer late mornings
- A small backpack for water, snacks, and personal items
If you’re hunting from a ground blind, darker clothing is still recommended to limit movement visibility.
Do I need to bring my own turkey calls?
You’re welcome to bring your own calls if you prefer, but all hunts are fully guided, and our guides handle the majority of calling during the hunt.
If you’re an experienced caller and want to call for your own bird, just let your guide know ahead of time and we’ll accommodate whenever conditions allow.
What calling style do you use?
We adjust calling style based on:
- Bird behavior
- Hunting pressure
- Weather conditions
- Time of season
Some days require aggressive run-and-gun calling, while others call for subtle, patient setups. Our approach is always dictated by what the birds are responding to or what you as the hunter are comfortable with doing—not a fixed routine.
Are youth hunters welcome?
Yes. Youth hunters are welcome on our spring turkey hunts.
We routinely guide:
- First-time turkey hunters
- Youth hunters
- Less-experienced hunters
- Female Hunters
We can slow the pace, hunt from ground blinds, and tailor setups to ensure a safe, positive experience. Youth hunters must be legally licensed and accompanied by a parent or guardian as required by state regulations.
Can youth hunters shoot from a ground blind?
Absolutely. Ground blind hunts are an excellent option for youth hunters, providing:
- Concealment for movement
- Clear shooting lanes
- A controlled, comfortable setup
Let us know in advance if a youth hunter will be participating so we can plan accordingly.
How physically demanding are the hunts?
Hunt intensity varies based on your preference.
- Run-and-gun hunts involve walking and moving between setups
- Ground blind hunts are low-movement and ideal for hunters who prefer a more stationary approach
We’ll discuss your comfort level before the hunt and tailor the strategy accordingly.
What time do hunts typically end?
All spring turkey hunts wrap up by noon. Most action occurs in the early morning hours, but we stay flexible based on bird activity.
Can I harvest more than one turkey?
Harvest limits depend on the length of your hunt:
- 3 days or more: up to 2 toms
- 2 days or less: 1 tom
All harvests must comply with Maryland regulations.
Is lodging available?
Yes. Lodging with dinners is available at our Wingate Lodge for an additional $75 per hunter, per night. Lodging must be arranged at the time of booking.
What if birds are not active on one property?
We hunt multiple private properties totaling over 900 acres. If birds go quiet or shift patterns, we will move to another property when necessary to stay on active turkeys. HOWEVER, please remember that this is a wild turkey in a fair-chase scenario so anything can happen… including nothing at all. WE ARE NOT A HIGH-FENCE OPERATION.
How far in advance should I book?
Spring turkey hunts fill quickly due to limited dates and private-land access. We recommend booking as early as possible to secure preferred dates and lodging.
