Chesapeake Bay diver duck hunts with Nanticoke Outfitters is a late-season, big-water game that demands the right equipment, disciplined setups, and an adaptive mindset. Our guided diver duck hunts take place on the Chesapeake Bay, where conditions change fast and birds dictate every decision we make.
Chesapeake Bay Diver Duck hunts are not scripted. The ducks determine where we hunt and how we hunt them on any given day. From boat positioning to decoy layout, everything is adjusted in real time to match weather, wind, and bird movement.
How We Hunt Diver Ducks
Most of our Chesapeake Bay diver duck hunts are conducted from a boat blind, providing mobility and protection in open-water conditions. When conditions allow and bird behavior calls for it, we may also hunt from a layout blind on the Chesapeake Bay.
Common Setups Include:
- Boat blind hunts (primary method)
- Layout blind hunts when conditions and safety allow
- Long-line decoy spreads tailored to current bird movement
Because we’re hunting open water, flexibility and safety are always the priority.

Species We Target
Our diver duck hunts focus on classic Chesapeake Bay species, including:
- Redheads
- Bluebills (scaup)
- Canvasbacks
- Buffleheads
Species presence varies with weather and migration timing, but the third split consistently provides opportunities for quality diver shooting when birds are concentrated on the Bay.

Decoy Strategy for Chesapeake Bay Diver Duck Hunts: Long Lines
We primarily run long-line decoy spreads, typically setting:
- Approximately a dozen decoys per line
- Lines spaced and angled based on wind, current, and approach lanes
This system allows us to efficiently cover water, adjust quickly, and create realistic movement patterns that diver ducks respond to in big-water environments.
Shot Size & Gear Recommendations
Even though these hunts are conducted from a boat, waders are strongly recommended to stay dry from boat spray and shifting conditions.
Recommended Setup:
- Shot size: BB or #2
- Non-toxic shot as required
- Weather-appropriate outer layers and waterproof gear
Diver ducks carry a much denser feather layer than puddle ducks. Using heavier shot improves penetration, increases lethality, and helps prevent chasing cripples across open water—an important consideration on the Chesapeake Bay.
Chesapeake Bay diver duck hunts Season Timing: Third Split
Our diver duck hunts take place during Maryland’s third split, which typically runs:
- Mid-December through late January (approximately December 15 – January 31)
This late-season window is when diver ducks are most consistent on the Bay and conditions align for productive hunts. The weather can also be extremely unforgiving so be prepared with lots of layers for warmth.
