Choptank River, Taylor’s Island & Tangier Sound
When winter settles over the Chesapeake Bay and most waterfowl migrations are in full swing, sea duck hunting is just getting good. For hunters looking for fast action, incredible scenery, and some of the most challenging waterfowl on the East Coast, a Chesapeake Bay sea duck hunting with Nanticoke Outfitters delivers an unforgettable experience.
We specialize in guided Chesapeake Bay sea duck hunting, focusing our efforts on the Choptank River, Taylor’s Island, and Tangier Sound — moving locations based on where the birds are feeding, rafting, and flying most consistently. Every hunt is planned around current conditions, bird movement, and safety, ensuring you’re in the best possible spot on any given day.

Why the Chesapeake Bay Is a Sea Duck Mecca
The Chesapeake Bay is one of the most important wintering areas for sea ducks in North America. Vast open water, shallow feeding flats, strong tidal movement, and abundant food sources make this region a magnet for birds throughout late fall and winter.
Common species we target include:
- Scoters (black, surf, and white-winged)
- Long-tailed ducks (Oldsquaw)
- Some times these divers show up as well:
- Buffleheads
- Goldeneyes
- Occasionally Canvasbacks, Redheads & Bluebills when conditions line up
These birds are built for rough water, high winds, and long flights — which makes hunting them both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
Our Core Sea Duck Hunting Areas
Choptank River
The Choptank River offers a unique blend of open water and structure that sea ducks love. Strong tidal currents concentrate food, while sheltered areas provide loafing and flight corridors. This area is ideal on days when weather limits long runs but birds are still moving well.
Taylor’s Island
Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Taylor’s Island is a classic Chesapeake sea duck destination. Expansive flats, deep channels, and heavy bird traffic make this area incredibly productive during peak migration and cold snaps. When birds stack up here, action can be fast and consistent.
Tangier Sound
When conditions allow, Tangier Sound is hard to beat. Some of the best Chesapeake Bay sea duck hunting can be found here. Known for big water, big views, and big bird numbers, this area holds massive rafts of sea ducks throughout the season. Hunts here are weather-dependent, but when we go, it’s often the kind of day hunters talk about for years.
We don’t lock ourselves into one location. We hunt where the birds are — plain and simple.
Mobile, Bird-Focused Hunting Strategy
Sea ducks are nomadic by nature. Wind direction, water temperature, tides, and food availability all influence where birds stack up from day to day. That’s why our hunts are fully mobile.
Before every trip, we:
- Scout current bird concentrations
- Monitor weather and sea conditions
- Adjust launch locations accordingly
- Choose the safest and most productive area for the day
This flexible approach is what separates a good Chesapeake Bay sea duck hunting trip from a great one.

Experienced Guides & Safe, Capable Boats
Chesapeake Bay sea duck hunting isn’t something you “figure out as you go.” Big water demands experience, preparation, and respect for conditions.
Our guides:

- Understand sea duck behavior, flight patterns, and decoy placement
- Prioritize safety, communication, and professionalism
Our boats are fully equipped for cold-weather hunts, with proper safety gear and layouts designed specifically for open-water waterfowling.
What a Typical Sea Duck Hunt Looks Like
Most hunts don’t begin too early, with a run to the chosen location just as we are getting shooting light. Depending on conditions, we may hunt over large open-water decoy spreads or target flight lines where birds move between feeding and loafing areas.
Here’s What You Can Expect:
- Fast-moving birds
- Challenging shots
- Plenty of action when birds commit
- Stunning sunrises over open water
Sea duck hunts are high-energy, hands-on experiences — perfect for hunters who enjoy dynamic shooting and rugged environments.

When to Book a Trip for Chesapeake Bay Sea Duck Hunting
Sea duck season typically peaks late fall through winter, with the best hunting often occurring during cold weather pushes and sustained wind patterns. Prime dates fill quickly, especially during holidays and cold snaps.
If you’re flexible with dates and weather windows, we can often time your hunt for ideal conditions. Our hunts typically book up 6-12 months prior to the hunt date so don’t wait to get on our calendar. We don’t offer any sea duck hunts in October. We chase sea ducks the last 2 weeks of November and from about December 15th through the end of January.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chesapeake Bay Sea Duck Hunting
When is the best time for sea duck hunting on the Chesapeake Bay?
The best sea duck hunting on the Chesapeake Bay typically occurs from late fall through winter, with peak action during cold weather pushes. Strong winds, dropping temperatures, and sustained cold fronts often concentrate birds and create excellent hunting conditions.
What species of sea ducks can I hunt on the Chesapeake Bay?
Common species include black scoters, surf scoters, white-winged scoters, long-tailed ducks (oldsquaw), and often we will harvest buffleheads, and goldeneyes. Depending on migration patterns and weather, canvasbacks, redheads, and bluebills may also be present.
Does weather affect sea duck hunting success?
Yes — weather plays a major role. Wind direction, wind speed, tides, and temperature shifts all influence bird movement. Some of the best hunts happen on colder, windier days when sea ducks are actively flying and feeding.
Do you hunt the same location every day?
No. We hunt the Choptank River, Taylor’s Island, or Tangier Sound depending on where birds are most active. Our mobile approach allows us to stay on birds rather than forcing hunts in unproductive areas.
Is sea duck hunting suitable for experienced and beginner hunters?
