A First Turkey Hunt He’ll Never Forget: Kaiser’s Big Morning in the Woods

There are a lot of turkey hunts that come and go each spring—but every once in a while, one stands out. Not because of the size of the bird, but because of what it means.
This was one of those hunts.
This was Kaiser’s first turkey hunt.
The Kind of Morning You Hope For on Your First Turkey Hunt
We got set up early, just as the woods were starting to wake up. It didn’t take long before we heard that first gobble echo through the trees. Then another. And another.
Birds were fired up on the roost.
That’s exactly what you want to hear when you’ve got a young hunter with you on their first hunt. It builds excitement fast—but it also raises expectations.
As the birds flew down, they stayed vocal for a bit, gobbling as they hit the ground. Everything was lining up the way you draw it up.
And then… it all went quiet.
When It Goes Silent
If you’ve hunted turkeys long enough, you know how this part goes.
One minute they’re talking, the next minute it feels like they disappeared. No gobbles. No movement. Just quiet woods and a lot of second guessing.
For a first-time hunter, this is where things can get tough. It’s easy to lose focus. Easy to start wondering if the opportunity has already slipped away.
But this is where patience matters.
Striking One at the Right Time
Around 8:00am, we decided to make a move.
Our guide Joe hit a series of yelps—nothing aggressive, just enough to check the temperature of the woods.
And just like that… a gobble.
Not far either.
That one response changed everything.
A few minutes later, Joe worked him again with another set of yelps. The tom answered back—and this time, he was noticeably closer.
Now we knew we had a bird committed.
When It All Comes Together
The next few minutes felt like slow motion.
You could tell that bird was coming. Every sense sharp. Every eye locked on the setup.
And then he appeared.
The tom came in exactly how you hope they do—closing the distance and making his way straight toward the decoys.
No hesitation. No hang-ups.
Just a textbook approach.
Kaiser stayed calm through it all. That’s not always easy, especially on your first hunt when everything feels bigger, louder, and faster than expected.
When the moment came, he did exactly what he needed to do.
One clean, well-placed shot.
A Moment That Sticks With You
There’s something different about a first harvest, especially during your first turkey hunt.
It’s not just about the bird—it’s about the experience. The early morning. The ups and downs. The silence. The adrenaline. The execution.
That’s what builds hunters.
That’s what creates memories that last.
Kaiser did everything right, and it paid off in a big way.

Why These Hunts Matter
At Nanticoke Outfitters, we’ve said it before and we’ll keep saying it—introducing young hunters to the outdoors is one of the most important things we do.
It’s not about rushing the process or guaranteeing a result.
It’s about putting them in the right position, teaching them how it all works, and letting them experience it the right way.
Sometimes it happens fast. Sometimes it takes time.
But when it comes together like it did for Kaiser, it’s something special.
Congratulations, Kaiser
First turkey hunt and first turkey in the books—and it couldn’t have played out any better.
We’re proud to have been part of it, and we’re looking forward to watching what comes next.
Stay focused, committed and shoot straight.
